In the first of its kind, Taiwan last week, became the first Asian country to legalise same-sex unions. As the landmark achievement for LGTBQ rights that came into effect on Friday, hundreds of same-sex couples exchanged vows on the first day following the legalisation. The Interior Ministry said 500 same-sex couples registered their marriages across the island on Friday according to Standard.co.uk.
‘’The legalisation of marriage is only the first step," said a 48-year-old novelist who writes under the pen name Chen Hsue who has lived with her partner for more than 10 years.
"In the future, through this legalisation, I hope LGBT people could be accepted as ordinary people by Taiwanese society.â€
The news which resonated across the world was received with overwhelming responses from prominent gay people.  Ellen DeGeneres also took to Twitter to share her reaction regarding the ground-breaking news, ‘’Let’s celebrate every step in the right direction’’ she wrote.
