Trust and faith are an important part of any relationship, and being cheated by your partner is an awful feeling. It is emotionally devastating and it take years to move on. When someone cheats on you, it’s quite natural to know why he/ she did it. But there is rarely a simple answer to why someone becomes unfaithful. It could be a result of problems in your marriage, or it could be totally unrelated to you or to your marriage. Whatever be the reason, there will be a lot of complicated feelings to go through and a lot to think about as you decide how to move forward. Here are a few tips that could help you cope with the aftermath of betrayal:
Accept your feelings: Accept the fact that your partner has cheated on you. In such cases, agitation, confusion, depression and pain are quite normal. Don’t run away from what has happened as it would not do any good to you. If you’re trying to forgive your partner, think again to take a wise decision. It is natural to grieve the relationship you once had.
Gather evidence of what happened: Before confronting your partner, ensure that you have the required proof so that your partner cannot lie or deny what happened.
Don’t seek revenge: Being betrayed by your partner can induce rage. In such a state, your first instinct may be to punish your mate by trash-talking him to friends (or worse, on social media), or think about having an affair yourself to get even. You may get a temporary sense of satisfaction but ultimately they can work against you. You won’t be able to focus on healing and moving on.
Avoid the blame game: Blaming yourself, your partner or someone else won’t change anything. It’s just a waste of energy. Try not to play the victim either as it will only make you feel more helpless and bad about yourself.
Don’t give in to your partner’s apologies: They may be feeling sorry but first, understand the reason and get to the root of the problem. Don’t simply forgive them and hope and pray that things go back to the way they were.
