Jonathan Van Ness has made history by becoming the first solo, non-female Cosmopolitan UK cover star in 35 years. The last non-female-identifiying star to appear as a solo cover star in Cosmopolitan UK was singer Boy George in 1984, while One Direction graced the cover as a group in 2012.
Sharing the historic news, Ness took in his social media with the caption, ‘’First non female cover star in 35 years, thanks for having me @CosmopolitanUK showing more variations of beauty for young LGBTQ+ people YAS QUEEN photo by @Rachell Smith.
In the cover image for the January 2020 issue of Cosmopolitan UK, Van Ness wears an orange and pink tulle gown by American designer Christian Siriano which he matched it with Nike shoes and striped socks.
"Jonathan is warm, funny, opinionated, kind and brave, all qualities that resonate with our audience," Cosmopolitan UK editor-in-chief Claire Hodgson told Time.
"He is encouraging people to love who they are, which is at the heart of what our brand stands for -- we could all do with a little more self-love in our lives."
Van Ness has previously stated that he identifies as non-binary and gender non-conforming, saying that his preferred pronouns are “he/him/his”.
