DoNER sanctions projects to boost tourism in Tripura

New Delhi:

Tripura, a lesser promoted place in the map of tourism, is gearing up to welcome tourists and shaping up as a travel destination in the Northeast.

The Development of North Eastern Region Ministry (DoNER) has sanctioned two projects worth Rs 48 crore to turn Tripura a tourist hub, state Tourism Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said on Thursday.

The funds will be used in repairing and developing two roads that connect two tourism spots—Chabimura and Thirthamuk—at Amarpur sub-division in Gomati district, the minister said.

”An eight-km long road from near a lake at Fatiksagar in Amarpur town to Chabimura and a 20-km long road from Thirthamukh to Raishyabari in Dhalai district would be repaired and developed with the funds,” Roy said.

Gomati lies about 75 kilometers from Agartala.

”We are trying to make Chabimura and Thirthamuk more attractive for the tourists. We will work on developing the roads, offer proper boating facility across the 14-km stretch of water body, build tourist cottages, arrange unique delicacies and more facilities for tourists,” the minister said.

Roy said that the projects were approved at a meeting of the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme, an inter-ministerial body, in New Delhi recently.’

Earlier, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, on gaining power, had said that his government would focus on developing tourism to boost the economy of the state.
