New Delhi:

The United Arab Emirates is one of the forerunners in technological and infrastructural development, be it the Hyperloop or futuristic, driverless flying cars. However, the country is going one step further in advancing their technology with the proposal of an undersea rail link that could connect India’s financial capital, Mumbai.

According to reports, residents will soon be able to travel from Fujairah to Mumbai by undersea rail network. The National Advisor Bureau Limited Managing Director and chief consultant Abdulla Alshehhi, during the UAE-India Conclave in Abu Dhabi, said this will benefit not just passengers, but trade could also be enhanced.

"This is a concept. We plan to connect Indian city of Mumbai with Fujairah through ultra-speed floating trains. The project aims to boost bilateral trade. There will be export of oil to India from Fujairah port and import of excess water from Narmada River. In addition, other GCC partners can also improve export and import," he told a gathering of businessmen and industry experts.

Alshehhi, who is the founder of the National Advisor Bureau, added that the idea needs to have multiple facets which need to be considered before the go-ahead signal is given.

"We will do feasibility study of the project. This is concept but a cool project to look at," Alshehhi said. The total rail network will be close to 2,000km.

This concept of underwater network however is vastly proliferating and similar projects apart from the UAE and Mumbai are also underway. China has plans to connect Russia, Canada and the US. Indian cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be connected by high-speed rail corridor including undersea by 2022.
