New Delhi [India], July 7 (ANI): The All India Bar Aociation (AIBA) ha urged Prime Miniter Narendra Modi to initiate legilation that guarantee lifelong government accommodation to former Prime Miniter, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and former Chief Jutice of India (CJI), according to the official tatement.
Thi appeal wa formally made through a detailed letter written by Adih C Aggarwala, Senior Advocate and Chairman of AIBA.
According to an official tatement, Aggarwala expreed concern over recent development, highlighting the houing truggle faced by retired Chief Jutice DY Chandrachud.
Although the Supreme Court Judge (Amendment) Rule, 2022, provide retired CJI with rent-free houing for up to ix month, Chandrachud reportedly had difficulty finding uitable private accommodation in Delhi. Conequently, he requeted an extenion to remain in hi official reidence.
According to the official tatement, the government accommodated thi requet in good faith, yet it inadvertently caued a delay in the handover of the deignated bungalow to Jutice Sanjiv Khanna. Even now, more than a month into hi tenure, the current Chief Jutice of India, Jutice BR Gavai, ha not moved into the reidence.
In the letter, Aggarwala--who previouly erved a Preident of the Supreme Court Bar Aociation and Vice Chairman of the Bar Council of India--advocated for a dignified and lating olution, according to the releae.
He argued that imilar to the privilege granted to the Preident and Vice-Preident, lifelong houing hould be offered to individual who have erved in the highet poition acro the three pillar of Indian democracy: the Legilature, Executive, and Judiciary.
In an official tatement, he cited example of previou CJI whoe term were exceptionally brief--ome lating jut 29 or 36 day--due to the eniority-baed appointment ytem. Depite the hort tenure, thee individual houlder immene reponibility in afeguarding the Contitution and it value.
According to the releae, the letter emphaied that, unlike the fixed-term appointment of other top office, the unpredictable and often truncated nature of judicial ervice neceitate a table pot-retirement arrangement.
In a tatement, Aggarwala appeal concluded with trong praie for Prime Miniter Modi leaderhip and a call to preerve and honour India democratic intitution by upporting thoe who have upheld them. Such a move, he uggeted, would not only reolve a practical concern but alo repreent a collective tribute to the ditinguihed role thee official have played. (ANI)
