New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): Congress MP Randeep Surjewala, along with other INDIA bloc MPs, including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, was on Monday detained by Delhi Police for protesting against the Election Commission.

Delhi Police rounded up MPs participating in a protest against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and alleged electoral malpractices. The MPs began their march from the Makar Dwar of the Parliament under the leadership of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to the Election Commission headquarters. They were detained by Delhi Police who set up barricades.

Surjewala who was among those who ushered them into a bus to be taken away to the police station, Surjewala said, Ab ek hi naara hai- Bol raha hai poora desh, vote hamara choo ke dekh (Now there is only one slogan- the whole country is saying, touch our vote and see)

Will the prison bars be able to stop Rahul Gandhi and the Opposition. Ab ek hi naara hai- Bol raha hai poora desh, vote hamara choo ke dekh...The people of this country have rejected the partnership of the Modi government and the ECI, Surjewala said.

Additionally, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that the Opposition MPs wanted to give a document to the Election Commission about SIR; however, the MPs are not being allowed to head to the office of the Election Commission.

Jairam Ramesh told ANI, All MPs want to give a document to the Election Commission about the SIR. This was our demand. I wrote this letter last evening and the chunaav aayog, which has now become churaav aayog, did not give me a reply. And now they say that only 30 MPs can come. We wanted all opposition MPs to collectively give a document to the Election Commission. We have been stopped here itself. We are not being allowed to head to the Election Commission.

The MPs were raising slogans of vote chor as they marched towards the office of the poll body at Nirvachan Sadan, before being halted by the Police.

The Police have said that the Oppositon MPs had no permission to hold the protest.

The detained INDIA bloc leaders have been taken to a nearby Police Station. We are still counting the number of MPs detained. There was no permission for a protest here, but we had intimation.

Reinstating the Election Commission appointment for interaction with upto 30 people, the Police said they will take 30 MPs to the EC office upon receiving their names.

New Delhi DCP Devesh Kumar said, There was a permission for 30 MPs from the Election Commission. Since they were in large numbers, we detained them. We have informed them that 30 MPs will be allowed (to meet ECI), We will take 30 MPs (to the Election Commission of India) when we get their names.

Earlier in the day, EC had granted an appointment for an interaction at 12 PM noon on the request of the Congress Party. It had requested to submit the names of upto 30 people along with their vehicle numbers for the interaction due to the limitation of space. (ANI)
