Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], October 8 (ANI): Biju Janata Dal Vice-President Debu Prasad Mishra on Wednesday condemned the recent attempt to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, and said that only a lunatic can attempt such an action.

Speaking to ANI, Mishra highlighted the calmness of CJI Gavai in handling the situation, saying that if the Chief Justice had not intervened, more drastic action could have been taken against the lawyer.

It is very unfortunate and any sane man will criticise this... Only lunatics can do that... The good thing about Justice Gavai is that he was calm and composed... The Bar Council of India has cancelled his license because of the intervention of Justice Gavai; otherwise, more drastic actions would have been taken against him, Mishra said.

On Monday, a 71-year-old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, attempted to throw a shoe at the CJI during working hours at the Supreme Court. He was immediately apprehended by security personnel and escorted out.

As per sources, while being taken away, Kishore shouted, Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan.

Meanwhile, Rakesh Kishore said that he does not regret his action.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Kishore said that he was hurt by the CJI remarks while dismissing a plea seeking restoration of the structure of Lord Vishnu in the Javari temple in Khajuraho.

The All India Judges Association (AIJA) expressed serious concern over the advocate conduct, stating it sought to undermine the dignity and authority of CJI Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and companion judges of the Supreme Court.

In a resolution, the Association described the act as unbecoming of the legal profession and said it was in violation of the constitutional ethos of decorum, discipline, and institutional integrity.

The AIJA noted that such conduct strikes at the very core of the mutual respect that sustains the Bench-Bar relationship and constitutes a direct affront to judicial independence.

Reaffirming its solidarity with CJI BR Gavai and the entire judiciary, the Association underscored its commitment to upholding the majesty and impartiality of the Supreme Court. It urged members of the legal fraternity to adhere to professional ethics and safeguard the dignity of judicial institutions. (ANI)
