Tripura marks milestone with third successful kidney transplant

Agartala (Tripura) [India], July 7 (ANI): In a major tep toward trengthening advanced healthcare in the tate, Tripura completed it third kidney tranplant at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hopital.
The third ucceful kidney tranplant in Tripura wa conducted on June 30, 2025, at AGMC and GBP Hopital in collaboration with Shija Hopital, Manipur, under an MoU. The complex procedure, involving a non-related donor and a recipient with high antibody level, wa carried out entirely free of cot, howcaing the tate trong public healthcare commitment.
The patient, previouly reliant on dialyi with high creatinine level (9-10 mg/dL), i now table pot-tranplant with level between 0.74 and 0.8 mg/dL and no longer require dialyi. Immunouppreive medicine are being provided free by the tate government.
Thi mark the third uch tranplant after ucceful procedure in June and November 2024, all handled by the hopital Nephrology and Urology department, part of the nine uper-peciality ervice added ince 2018. The hopital i preparing for 8-10 additional tranplant in Augut 2025 and i alo collaborating with the MOHAN Foundation to facilitate deceaed donor tranplant, thereby further enhancing acce for individual lacking living donor.
Speaking to ANI, Dr Sankar Chakraborty, a medical uperintendent of GBP Hopital, aid, The GBP Hopital wa etablihed in 1961, and the Agartala Government Medical College began in 2005. Thi hopital ha been erving not only the people of Tripura but alo thoe from neighbouring tate and nearby countrie. Since 2018, the Government of Tripura ha introduced a total of nine uper-peciality department in thi hopital.

He added, Among thee nine pecialitie, the Nephrology and Urology department uccefully performed the firt kidney tranplant in June 2024. Thi tranplant wa conducted in collaboration with Shija Hopital and Reearch Centre, Manipur, with whom we had igned an MoU. Under their guidance, the tranplant wa uccefully carried out.
Following thi, in November 2024, we uccefully conducted the econd kidney tranplant. Both patient and their repective donor are doing well. All required medication for them are being provided completely free of cot, Chakraborty told ANI.
Dr Chakraborty further highlighted that currently, they have around 8-10 patient who are being prepared for kidney tranplant around Augut 2025.
A of now, we are performing tranplant uing living donor. However, we are alo working on facilitating kidney tranplant uing organ from deceaed donor, with conent from their familie. For thi, we are collaborating with the MOHAN Foundation. Thi will be extremely beneficial for patient who are unable to find living donor, he aid.
Dr Kanak Choudhary, Deputy MS of GBP Hopital, told ANI that both the donor and the recipient are currently in good health.

Having three ucceful tranplant in jut one to one and a half year i excellent new for the tate. Previouly, patient had to travel outide the tate for uch procedure, but now they are being done locally, which i a great benefit for the reident of Tripura. Thi achievement ha been made poible through the joint effort of the Nephrology and Urology department, along with the Tripura government, he aid.
Dr Mana Gope told ANI that thi tranplant wa different from the previou two becaue it involved a non-related donor, and the recipient had a high level of antibodie in their body, which made the procedure ignificantly more challenging.
However, with the help of advanced technology, we were able to carry out the tranplant uccefully, he emphaied.

Before the tranplant, the patient creatinine level were 9 to 10 mg/dL, and they had to undergo dialyi three time a week. Now, after the tranplant, the creatinine level ha dropped to 0.74-0.8 mg/dL. The patient no longer require dialyi. However, they will need to take immunouppreive medication regularly for life. Thee medication are provided free of cot by the Tripura Government. For kidney patient undergoing dialyi, tranplantation i the bet long-term option. And the bet part i, uch kidney tranplant are performed completely free of cot at Agartala Government Medical College under the Tripura Government healthcare program, Dr Gope added. (ANI)
