Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 27 (ANI): As the US 50 per cent tariff on Indian imports comes into effect from Wednesday, leather businessmen from Kanpur expressed disappointment over the decision.

Shamim Azad, a leather exporter, stated that the United Kingdom is currently experiencing a recession and he had some work in the US, but it has completely flopped at present. He mentioned that the US customers have asked them to put the orders on hold due to the tariffs.

It will be implemented from today. The UK is going through a recession, and we had some work in the US that also flopped. Customers asked us to cancel the orders we had already placed. Our US customer said that there will be no production until a decision is taken on tariff. The situation is very bad at this time, he said.

Another leather exporter, Wasim, mentioned that he hoped for a solution to the matter by citing China example; however, in the present time, the situation has worsened.

The day this announcement was made, a 25 tariff was imposed and it increased by another 25. Since then, all our customers have been put on hold. We were waiting for 26-27 so that there is a solution to this. 100 tariff was imposed on China as well but the people there hesitated and the matter was resolved and the work was done. We thought it would reduce here as well. Now the situation seems to be getting worse and we dont understand what to do, he said.

The 50 per cent tariffs on imports from India to the United States came into effect on Wednesday. This follows the draft notice published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that stated that the order would come in effect from August 27.

According to the notice, the additional duties are being imposed to give effect to the President Executive Order 14329 of August 6, 2025, titled Addressing Threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation. (ANI)
