Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 26 (ANI): As the nation marks the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas today, Kargil war veteran Subedar Dhanesh Yadav recounted the early days of the 1999 war, highlighting the courage and sacrifices made by Indian soldiers.

Speaking to ANI, Kargil warrior Subedar Dhanesh Yadav, who was serving in 137 CETF BN (TA) 39 Gorkha Rifles, highlighted how the soldiers were deployed overnight to the Turtuk sector. He recalled that two Indian fighter jets had crashed two days prior to their deployment, which led to further escalation.

I was in the first glacier when we got to know about the Pakistani intrusion on 21st May. Our CO deployed us overnight to the Turtuk sector. Two of our fighter jets had fallen two days ago at that time. The war went on for 2-3 months. We were not prepared with weapons or clothing. We went there with limited resources. We took some time to prepare and cleared the area that we have under us today, Yadav said.

Reflecting heavy casualties suffered during the conflict, Yadav stated, Around 527 soldiers laid their lives and 18 of them were from my battalion, which captured 4 Pakistani posts.

He further emphasised, The Army is not for dying, but to kill anyone who tries to invade the country.

In his message on Vijay Diwas, Subedar Yadav urged citizens to always honour the memory of fallen soldiers. He said, Pakistan betrayed us and climbed up the posts before the pre-decided timings. Just like Captain Vikram Batra, there were many heroes who gave strong messages and showed immense valour. Always remember the heroes who laid their lives valiantly and regard those who dedicate their lives to the service of the nation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas and remembered the sacrifices of the jawans, who fought in the Kargil War with courage and valour. PM Modi said that sacrifices made by the jawans will continue to inspire every generation.

Heartfelt greetings to the countrymen on Kargil Vijay Diwas. This occasion reminds us of the unparalleled courage and valour of those brave sons of Mother India who dedicated their lives to protect the nation pride. Their passion to sacrifice everything for the motherland will continue to inspire every generation, PM Modi posted on X.

President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday also extended her greetings on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. This day symbolises the extraordinary valour, courage, and steadfast determination of our jawans. Their dedication and supreme sacrifice for the nation will forever inspire its citizens, the President posted on X.
