New Delhi [India], July 29 (ANI): Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs on Tuesday held a protest near the Gandhi statue in the Parliament over the law and order situation in Odisha, targeting the BJP-led government in the state over the cases of crime against women.

The protest came in the wake of the alleged gang-rape in Jagatsinghpur and the attempted murder of a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted and set on fire by unidentified assailants in Puri district.

Slamming the BJP government, BJD MP Sasmit Patra said that there is no hope of justice in Odisha.

The way heinous crimes are being committed against women and minors in Odisha, and the BJP government in Odisha has failed to provide safety to women. There is no hope of justice in Odisha. FIRs are filed, but no investigation takes place. There is no action against the culprits. We demand a judicial inquiry, Patra told ANI.

He added, In FM College Balasore, a student committed self-immolation and died. In Puri, there was an attempt to burn a student, who is being treated in AIIMS Delhi. This shows that the law and order in Odisha have collapsed. We hope that at least the central government wakes up and instructs the BJP government in the state.

BJD MP Sulata Deo slammed the BJP government over the increasing number of rape cases in Odisha.

We are holding a peaceful protest because women, Adivasis, children, and Dalits, no one is safe in Odisha. The USA issued an advisory not to visit Odisha, citing it as unsafe. While the victim is being treated at AIIMS, even the Supreme Court has called the Puri case hameful. When will the double-engine government wake up? Every day, 15 such cases happen in Odisha and 3054 cases in a year, Deo told ANI.

Earlier, Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik raised concern over the safety of women in the state, stating that a disturbing wave of crimes against women is gripping the state. He said the recent surge in sexual assaults reflects a troubling erosion of law enforcement. (ANI)
