New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): As several Opposition MPs opposed the Constitution Amendment bill seeking to amend the procedure of removing Chief Ministers, and ministers, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday defended the government move to bring the amendments, asserting that it is sad for Indian governance that leaders who go to jail for a longer duration continue to remain in power.
The remarks of the BJP came as the Lok Sabha witnessed a ruckus during its proceedings as opposition members tore copies of the bill and threw them towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Speaking to ANI, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, It is very sad that MPs are behaving like this, trying to fight. What is their problem with this bill? Do they have a problem because this bill provides a solution for people like Arvind Kejriwal, who go to jail but do not resign? People who go to jail and still run the government it is sad for Indian governance. This bill addresses this issue. I dont know why they are creating a ruckus.
The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 were referred to the Joint Committee of Parliament after Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced them in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days.
It is pertinent to mention that in 2024, Arvind Kejriwal did not resign, where he served for more than five months in jail as he was arrested in connection with the Enforcement Directorate Delhi Excise Policy case. He resigned soon after, getting bail in the matter.
Earlier today, Speaker Om Birla objected to the behaviour of opposition members. The Speaker said members should not lower the dignity of the House.
People are watching. Opposition members had earlier objected to the introduction of three bills, the speaker further added. (ANI)
