It is not raining ‘cats and dogs’ but spiders! The fear of the eight-legged creature, spiders, also known as Arachnophobia like any other fear can be extremely difficult to over with. From using cats or bug-sprays, arachnophobe's often gone through all-lengths to get rid of spiders. What if we tell you that your worst nightmare becomes a reality and is raining down right upon you? For residents in a rural area of Brazil's Minas Gerais, this fear of spider came true as the citizens in the state reported a ‘spider-rain’ or ‘rain of spiders’
Although, ‘raining-spider’ is often thought of as terrible lurid imagination, experts say that the phenomenon is typical in the region during hot, humid weather. João Pedro Martinelli Fonseca, who filmed one of the most widely shared clips, was traveling with his family to his grandparents’ farm in Espírito Santo do Dourado, about 250km north-east of São Paulo, when he realized the sky was covered with black dots.
He told a local newspaper that he was “stunned and scared” – especially when one of the spiders fell through the open window. The boy’s grandmother, Jercina Martinelli, told another local newspaper, “There were many more webs and spiders than you can see in the video. We’ve seen this before, always at dusk on days when it’s been really hot.”

While it looks like the spiders are floating in the air, Adalberto dos Santos, a biology professor specializing in arachnology, explained to the Guardian that they are actually hanging in a giant web to catch prey. The good news is these spiders are harmless to humans - in fact, they actually help us out by getting rid of insects such as mosquitoes and flies. The professor went on to say‘’ They benefit us far more than they harm us’’.
