A baby Lazarus and a wonder woman lady inspector. In one of the most extraordinary incidents, the baby of a pregnant woman, who allegedly committed suicide, was rescued by a lady sub-inspector of the Madhya Pradesh Police. According to sources, the woman who had committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of a cowshed near her home had a baby boy delivered by the inspector. The incident occurred in the Katni district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday. The wonder woman of a lady sub-inspector has now been distinguished as Kavita Sahani. According to sources, Sahani was among the first authorities to reach the spot and without a second thought immediately dived into retrieving the baby. She said, “We got a call around 7.15 am that Lakshmi Bai (36), wife of Santosh Singh, had committed suicide by hanging herself in Katni town. I reached the spot quickly. While examining her body, I found the baby boy stuck around her legs, with the umbilical cord still attached. I immediately wrapped a cloth around the crying baby. I called for immediate medical assistance. After cutting the umbilical cord and separating him, we brought mother’s body down for an autopsy.”

The woman, Lakshmi, who allegedly committed suicide was already nine months’ pregnant and also had four other children, including a 16-year-old girl. A doctor at the district hospital said, “The baby has a good chance of survival”. The child appears to be about eight-months-old and is not premature.
“It is difficult to find out the exact timing of her suicide and the delivery. But it is for sure that the baby was born because of hanging”, said Vivek Lal, ASP Katni. “All possible efforts to ascertain the cause behind the suicide will be made as the family is clueless,” said the officer. Santosh and Lakshmi are marginal farmers and make a living out of growing and selling vegetables.
