Official Twitter handle of government organizations no longer serve as a mere platform to announce regular information in a tedious tone. Social media handles of traffic police, DMRC, state police departments now take the onus of warning people about accidents and crimes with an interesting twist to it.
Recently, Rajasthan Police's Twitter handle has drawn the attention of netizens with its cheeky humour and warning drawing reference from Bollywood of the bygone era. Invoking Dilip Kumar and Madhubala starrer 'Mughal-E-Azam'', its recent tweet warned people against commiting honour killing.
"Careful. The era of Mughal-E-Azam has gone. If you hurt or try to hurt a couple, then the Rajasthan government, under #HonorKilling Bill 2019, can sentence you to life in jail or even death, in addition to a fine of Rs. 5 lakh... because to love is not a crime," the tweet read.
The tweet was made after a new bill passed by the state assembly last week affirmed that any person found guilty of attacking a couple for marrying against family or communities' wishes could face a life term or death and a fine of Rs. 5 lakhs.
For the uninitiated, Anarkali (Madhubala's character in Mughal-E-Azam) was a courtesan who fell in love with Salim aka Jehangir, the crown-prince of the Mughal throne and hence was buried between two walls by the ruler of the empire then, Akbar.
From "Sholay" to Akshay Kumar's latest film, "Mission Mangal" to Game of Thrones, these tweets are making people pay heed to their warning for good. DMRC's tweet with reference to a Game of Thrones character Sansa Stark too made much noise a few months back.
Some of these tweets are even shared by the real characters who whose reference was used, uping the buzz even more.
Mumbai's police has also in several instance picked up issues like drug awareness, wearing seat belt and infused them with humour to draw attention of the Twitterati.
Although, not sure if these tweets actually serve the purpose or not, but with their creative punchlines do definetly create a heavier impact among the masses.
