"Perfect crime does not exist and it's hard for a criminal not to leave any evidence behind," every word of this English proverb was proved right yet again on Friday. Yes! Neeraj, a 27-year-old thief, who might be busy celebrating his successful robbery at a general store in Uttarakhand's Dehradun, unknowingly left a piece of evidence at the scene, digging himself into a hole.
According to police, Neeraj, a resident of Dehradun, had been arrested on Wednesday for an alleged theft at a city store in June. The Aadhaar card of the 27-year-old Dehradun thief has reportedly played the key role in his arrest.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, sub-inspector Lokendra Bahuguna said, "The incident happened last month in the shop owned by victim Anil Sethi. The accused had entered the shop after breaking open the tin-ceiling of the shop".

The thief, however, remained at large for the last one month as the police could not identify him from the footage captured at the CCTV camera installed at the shop, he stated.
"Finally, on Wednesday, police got a vital clue when Sethi decided to clean the ceiling of the shop. During that he found a wallet lying there with the Aadhaar card of Neeraj. Police immediately raided the address mentioned on it but found that he was living in a different address," said Bahuguna.
Post that, police mobilised their informers to trace Neeraj and found his location in one of the slums in the city. Based on the input, the police raided the location and caught him on Wednesday.

"During the interrogation process, he confessed to the theft along with a previous one. It was found that he had gone to jail in 2012 for stealing mobile phones worth Rs 65,000," the police officer said.
"Both his parents had died about a year ago. He confessed to meeting his needs by committing theft but not working. He is still being interrogated to find any other thefts committed by him after which he would be produced before a court," Bahuguna, who is the investigating officer in the case, added.
