His father was an administrative officer and his elder brother was a vice chancellor in Aligarh Muslim University.

Shah did his schooling from St Anselm School in Ajmer and St Joseph College in Nainital. He did graduation in Arts from Aligarh Muslim University and National School of Drama. He was also a part of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
