She got her first breakthrough role as a lead actress in Sawan Bhadon (1970) opposite Navin Nischol. The film was declared hit and Rekha became a star overnight. Despite her new-found stardom, the Bollywood diva was criticized for her colour as well as for her Hindi. But her screen presence and acting silenced everyone.
