Shabana Azmi is an Indian film actress. She also worked in Television and Theatre. She is the alumni of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). She made her debut in 1974 and soon became one of the leading actresses of Parallel Cinema. She has appeared in over 120 Hindi and Bengali films in both mainstream and independent cinema. Since 1988 she has acted in several foreign projects. She is one of the finest actresses in India, won five National Film Award for Best Actress. She has also received five Filmfare Awards. She was also awarded Padma Shri in 1988.
ANKUR 1974
Azmi made her debut with this award winning film that also marked the beginning of her with legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal. The story of the film revolved around the feudal exploitation and double-standards. Benegal later went on to make classics like Mandi, Nishant and Junoon with Azmi.
Arth – 1982
Shabana Azmi plays a role of the wife of an unfaithful husband who is not prepared to face a divorce. She portrays hard-hitting vulnerability and grace in this critically-acclaimed film. The film's ghazal “Tum Itna jo muskura rahe ho†lends a feeling of melancholy, even after generations.

Azmi played the sophisticated and subtle woman who is also steady in her approach to make her disinterested husband realize her desires. Although the movie did not get most screen time, Shabana played his role very well.

Azmi starred opposite her favorite co-actor, Naseeruddin Shah. It is the love story of a visually-impaired principal and a teacher, where they fight their complexes to reconnect with the "touch" of love.

This is one of the most controversial roles of Azmi till date, where she plays a homosexual that incited the protest in society. Azmi played the different role and depicted the another side of her.
