From Rani Lakshmi Bai to Aruna Asaf Ali, the women freedom fighters gave their lives for the independence of the country. They fought fearlessly against the British rule and their contribution in India’s independence cannot be ignored. Here’s a list of such women freedom fighters. Born as Manikarnika, she changed her name to Lakshmi Bai in honour of Goddess Lakshmi. At the age of 14, she married Gangadhar Rao, the King of Jhansi, in 1834. She bravely fought against the British regime and kept them at bay till she breathed her last. She died at very young age of 22 when the British troops besieged Jhansi.
Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu

Born in 1879, Sarojini Naidu chaired the annual session of Indian National Congress at Kanpur in 1925. She was arrested in 1942 during the Quit India Movement. She was also the first woman governor of independent India and was commissioned in Uttar Pradesh.
Annie Besant

Annie Besant

Born in 1887, Annie Besant helped in the establishment of Central Hindu College in 1898. She launched the Home Rule league with Lokmanya Tilak in 1916. She was the first woman president of Indian National Congress. She also headed the Calcutta Session of Indian National Congress.
Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali

Born in 1909, Aruna Asaf Ali hoisted the INC flag at Gowalia Tank maidan in Mumbai during the Quit India Movement. She was also the founder of the National Federation of Indian Women, the women’s wing of CPI.
