Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister to lay emphasis on 'Look East' policy. He even did several international tours.

During his teenage years, Vajpayee was jailed briefly for opposing British colonial rule. However, he played no major role in Indian freedom.

He initially tried communism but later joined Hindu right-wing outfits- Rashtriya Swamyamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Jan Sangh.
