Goddess Durga is believed to have nine forms called Navadurgas and Shailputri is the first one amongst them. The Shailputri temple in Varanasi is dedicated to this form of Goddess Durga. Goddess Durga in the Shailputri form is also known as Sati, Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati. Maa Shailaputri is considered to be the absolute form of Mother Nature. Maa Shailputri was born to the King of Mountains. “Shail” means mountain and “putri” means daughter. As a result, she is known as Shailputri – the daughter of mountain.
