Scientists have reportedly observed spotted a massive black hole which as heavy as 100 suns. The potential black hole was spotted by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors at the European Gravitational Observatory. The black hole is twice as large as what physicists had believed was possible.
According to the NASA, a black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out. The gravity is so strong because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when a star is dying.
“Because no light can get out, people can't see black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The special tools can see how stars that are very close to black holes act differently than other stars, the NASA added.
Professor Stan Woosley, an astrophysicist at the University of California, told Quanta Magazine: “The prediction is no black holes, not even a few” in this mass range. “But of course, we know nature often finds a way.”
Scientists are in dilemma to figure out how this newly spotted potential large black hole came into existence. According to Qanta, they suspect that the black hole could be the result of smaller black holes colliding and merging into one gigantic one. They think it is possible that somewhere in a dense area of the universe, a 30 and 50 solar mass black hole could have merged and that the new black hole then combined with another one, which could explain the signals they detected, reported RT.
The Ligo and Virgo team refused to confirm or deny the rumours about the black hole. It is yet to release any detailed information about its latest observation period, which began in April. It plans to reveal everything by spring 2020, so we will have to wait until then to find out if the black hole even exists, and how it came into being, RT added.
