New Delhi:

Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Although asteroids orbit the Sun like planets, they are much smaller than planets. The celestial bodies can bring tsunamis, shock waves and flattening winds that could be catastrophic. The space rocks approach towards the Earth due to the gravitational forces that affect them. It is said that one day, all life on Earth will extinct and an asteroid could be the possible reason. Shocked to hear that? At least 66 million years ago from today, asteroid as powerful as 10 billion World War II-era atomic bombs caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. However, a car-sized asteroid slams into the Earth's atmosphere about once in a year. On the other hand, an asteroid large enough to threaten the existence of life on Earth arrives once in every few million years. On the other hand, other cosmic dangers such as solar storms and rogue gamma rays can be equally devastating for the planet. Due to these threats, Dr Weronika Sliwa of the Copernicus Science Centre Planetarium in Warsaw, Poland, said that humans should move to Mars before it’s too late.

During an interaction with Polish Press Agency (PAP), Dr Weronika Sliwa said, “It’s not good that humans only live on one planet. There’s a saying that you don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.” “Our planet is in danger from various cosmic catastrophes and phenomena that could unexpectedly appear on its surface. It would be better if humanity slowly starts to think about settling other bodies in the solar system and perhaps later – farther,” the scientist added.

Dr Sliwa said, “In fact, it seems at this very moment that the technological capability is here for such a manned journey to Mars to take place.” Dr Sliwa further stated that each mission risks injury or death to its crews and would carry an incredible cost. “It will simply cost more than any government right now would be willing to spend,” she added.

The scientist further said that another obstacle that stands in the way is the political will need to make these dreams a reality.

The astronomer also said, “As far as the commercial point of view, for now, we do not see any profitability in this type of mission, but in principle, any exploratory mission that does something for the very first time is always unprofitable.”At the end, the astronomer noted that the first steps need to be taken before going to Mars becomes a worthy investment.
