The Hawaiian lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bill that bans the selling of sunscreens containing hazardous compounds. The step is being seen as a major step towards preserving coral reefs.

The compounds present in the sunscreens are extremely hazardous for the environment, especially the coral reefs, according to a lot of scientists. The Hawaii lawmakers took notice of the harmful impact of sunscreen compounds to the coral reefs and elected to restrict it. The bill has to be signed by Gov. David Ige in order to ensure it is registered as a law. If it happens, then the law will take effect from 1, Jan, 2021 and Hawaii will be the first ever nation of the nation to set a ban on sale of sunscreens.

Mile Gabbard introduced Senate Bill 2571, which bans the sale and supply of sunscreens comprising oxybenzone and octinoxate in Hawaii. The bill was up for unemployment by House and Senate.

“Surprisingly, this is really a first-in-the-world law. Thus, Hawaii is on the leading edge by banning those harmful substances in sunscreens,” Sen. Gabbard composed in an email.

They are claiming that the sunscreen ban may damage human health and may boost the cancer probability of cancer in individuals.

Hawaii welcomes approximately 9 million sunscreen spread tourists per year and may become the first US state to prohibit the ingredient. The state legislature passed a bill to restrict the sale of sunscreen with more than 3,500 oxybenzone goods available on the market.

The bill was in the due clearance for than a year and a signature by the state governor is expected soon.

Hawaii visitors and residents will only be able to purchase sunscreen through a prescription from their physician.
