Hours Before Landing On Moon, ISRO Reveals How Chandrayaan-2 Rover Pragyan Works

Hours before the crucial touchdown of 'Vikram' module on the lunar surface in the early hours of September 7, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday introduced netizens to different parts of Chandrayaan-2's rover Pragyan and how it works. The historic moon landing of Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled to take place on Saturday between 1:30 am and 2:30 am.

Taking to Twitter, ISTO tweeted a YouTube video link, unveiling different parts of rover Pragyan and their functionality. Those parts include Solar Panel, Navigation Camera - Left, Navigation Camera - Right, Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS), Recieve/Transmit Antena and Rocker Bogie Assembly.

The 3:37 minute-long-video also explained how rover 'Pragyan' housed inside 'Vikram', Chandrayaan-2's Moon lander, will roll out and conduct investigations of the lunar soil with the help of its navigation cameras. After successful scanning of the surface of the Moon, the inputs will be transferred to Vikram and then Earth.

According to ISRO, 'Pragyan' can only communicate with the lander, while 'Vikram' has the capability to communicate with IDSN (Indian Deep Space Network) at Byalalu near Bengaluru, as well as with the orbiter and rover.
