The first celestial event of 2020, a penumbral lunar eclipse, will take place on January 10 and skywathchers will be able to witness the phenomenon from all corners of India, including West Bengal. The penumbral lunar eclipse will also be visible from different countries in Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe, he said.

In a normal lunar eclipse, the moon passes through the central part of the earth’s shadow called umbra, and one witnesses considerable darkening of the lunar disc.

The lunar eclipse on Friday will be the first of four penumbral lunar eclipses that will take place this year, Duari said, adding, the other three penumbral lunar eclipses will occur on June 5, July 5 and November 30.

Lunar Eclipse 2020 India Timings

The celestial event will last for four hours and five minutes will appear in India along with some other countries including of Africa, Asia and Europe. In India, the lunar eclipse will be visible from 10:37pm IST on January 10 to 2:42am IST on January 11. However, it will not be visible from United States.

How To Watch The Lunar Eclipse

In countries where the lunar eclipse will appear can be viewed live just by heading out. However, if you're staying in the US or any other places where the eclipse won't appear, you'll be able to watch the action through a live stream. YouTube channel Cosmosapiens will commence its lunar eclipse 2020 live stream at 10:30pm IST today. Space-focussed website Slooh.com will also live stream the event at 1am IST along with commentary by a team of experts.

After today's eclipse, the next penumbral lunar eclipse will occur on June 5 that will also be visible completely from India and other Asian countries. The other two penumbral eclipses will take place on July 4 and November 29 which will only be visible partially from India.
