A local fisherman near Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg district of Konkan region in Maharashtra caught a rare sawfish in his net. The monstrous sawfish is 20-feet long and weighs 700 kgs.
The news about the catching of this rare fish has been confirmed by Sindhudurg District Collector Uday Chowdhary. Fisherman Muneer Mujawar was returning to the shore when he found this big fish in his net.
“The fish is around 20 feet long and weighs around 700 kg. It is known as sawfish, because of its nose extension lined with sharp transverse teeth,” Mujawar said.
He said he has never found such kind of fish in his net. “When I found the sawfish, it was already injured. It must have tried to escape from the net,” he said.
However, he said that similar incidents of sighting of rare fish in the fishing net have happened in the past in Sindhudurg.
Sindhudurg is the southernmost coastal district of the state. Vijaydurg is famous for dolphin sightings. Meanwhile, it appears that the fish died as it was choked to death after it landed in the net.
