Ever since man first stepped foot on the Moon, questions have been raised if he can set up a facility down there. All such questions have been answered now.

JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronomers have been able to discover a giant cave on the Moon. The scientists discovered the cave on October 19.

The research paper which was co-authored by NASA and JAXA scientists proved that the pits which are located near the Marius Hill region on the moon are huge tubes that go underground. The cave found on the moon can become a potential spot for the astronauts to set up their exploratory bases.

Scientists have said that astronauts can remain in this cave and safeguard themselves from radiation and temperature changes. The ancient caverns can act as the perfect place to build up a lunar colony and can be used for future exploration.

According to the hypothesis by the scientists, the walls of the cave are the remains of a 3.5 billion-year-old lava tube which was emitted due to a volcanic activity. The research stated that the length of the cave is 50 kms while its width is 100 meters.

The research has been published in the American journal Geophysical Research Letters.
