New Delhi:

Black holes are a region of space-time exhibiting gravitational acceleration so strong that nothing—no particles or even electromagnetic radiation such as light—can escape from it. In the space, black holes are one of the most complex entities. In April 2019, a team of scientists brought us the first photo of a black hole. The team, called Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHT), will now be pocketing 3 million dollars. Yes, you read it right.

According to a report of edition.cnn.com, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHT) won the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, announced by the foundation Thursday. Other winners included the discovery of cellular signaling mechanisms and the discovery of a new endocrine system.

Currently in its eighth year, the Breakthrough Prize has three main prizes i.e. in Fundamental Physics, in Life Sciences and in Mathematics. Each prize winner is awarded $3 million, whether it's one researcher or a 347-person team, like the EHT team.

It is worth mentioning here that the scientists belonged to Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHT) worked for more than a decade to capture their award-winning image, combining the power of eight different radio telescopes around the world. “The team then used imaging algorithms to fill in the gaps and piece together the photo,” edition.cnn.com reported.

Importantly, in addition with the money, the prize winners will all be honoured at a Gala Awards Ceremony on November 3 this year.
