Social media has been flooded with reports of possible asteroid hits over the last few months. While the planet Earth has been proved lucky enough to survive all those previous calamities, another prediction made by a British scientist may send a chill down your spine.
Yes! According to Dr Iain McDonald, a top scientist at the Cardiff University, Wales, our planet will 'Inevitably' get hit by a doomsday asteroid one day or the other. However, McDonald has not specified an exact date or time for the end of human civilization.
Speaking at the BBC's Today programme, the scientists cited several incidents of dreaded asteroid hits in the past, adding that the possibility of similar catastrophic events could not be ruled out in near or distant future.
"I try not to because it would be calamitous. As geologists, we recognise these events throughout history and we try and think of effects they must have had on life at that time. We know that these things will always happen. There are always rocks flying through space. Inevitably one of these will hit us and it will have pretty dramatic effects," McDonald was quoted as saying.

In a related note, Iain McDonald was also a part of the team which predicted a deep impact crater hidden beneath the Greenland ice in mid-2018. The 31 kilometers wide and 1000 feet deep crater, which is assumed to be as old as three million years, if hits Earth, would leave a trail of destruction, causing irreparable damage to the human civilization.
There are also reports that the century-old crater could be the reason behind the extinction of Clovis people, which remains a mystery till the date. The mammoth-sized asteroid is also held responsible for the continuous change of climate called the 'Younger Dryas' over the last few years. Experts suggest that a giant iron meteorite impact may have resulted in the formation of this gigantic structure.
Meanwhile, conspiracy theorists have come up with another study which indicates an apocalypse on Earth due to the collision of the planet with Nibiru. Nibiru alias Planet X is an alleged killer planet that might be lurking at the edge of the solar system. Nibiru believers, however, argueed that the rogue planet is now in its collision course, and once it hits us, massive devastations will be triggered everywhere.

Though McDonald's prediction about the end of humanity appeared back in November 2018, the report has started doing rounds from the last few days following the crash of a stunning meteor into planet king Jupiter. After the August 7 Jupiter-meteor crash, Dr Heidi B Hammel revealed more information about the impacts of these objects like meteors wandering in the solar system.
"These impacts are important to us because they help us understand the population of small objects still winging around our Solar System. We are especially interested in the ones winging around near the Earth, of course, but the events out at Jupiter provide new data for our models of Solar System objects," Hammel told CBS News.
