The Indian Contingent were up for a fight as they earned a gold and silver on the opening day of the 21st Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast on Thursday.
India finished the day by winning two medals, both in weightlifting and now stands on the fourth spot in medals list led by England with 10 medals in their books.
Weightlifters Mirabai Chanu and Gururaja excelled to give India a gold and a silver, respectively.
Reigning world champion, Mirabai delivered a solid performance in the womens’ 48 kg category, setting Commonwealth records.

The Manipuri starlet was a dominant force as she marked 110 kg in clean and jerk and 86 kg in the snatch for totalling her points to 196 kg.
Meanwhile, Gururaja in men’s 56 kg category had amassed a total of 249 kg with 111kg in snatch and 138 kg in the clean and jerk to grab the silver medal.
Muthupandi Raja, the third weightlifter in action finished sixth in men’s 52 kg category.
Chanu, started by breaking the existing Games record with 80 kg lift, and went on to break her own record twice with successful attempts of 84kg and 86kg.
Whereas, Gururaja fell just short of Malaysian’ superstar Azhar Ahmed, who bagged a gold with a Games record of 261 kg.
India outclassed Pakistan 5-0 in the team badminton event, while the women hockey and basketball team suffered defeats against their respective opponents.
The cycling event also turned out to be a major disappointment as the team failed to qualify in 4,000 metre Pursuit event.
