It looks like October is proving to be the season for breaking wrists. After Mitchell Marsh punched the dressing room wall to fracture his wrist and get ruled out of the Pakistan Test, it is the turn of Aiden Markram to punch a 'solid object' and get himself injured on the wrist. However, the nature of the injury is bad enough to rule the right-hander out of the Ranchi Test that begins on October 19. In a statement released by Cricket South Africa, the injury was sustained after he hit out at an object following his dismissal in the Pune Test. In that game, he had sustained a silver pair, out for a two-ball duck in both innings and the mode of dismissal was LBW.
Team doctor Hashendra Ramjee said, "A CT scan of Aiden Markram's wrist showed a fracture involving the wrist bones. The medical team has therefore ruled him out of the next Test match against India. Arrangements have been made for him to see a specialist on his return to South Africa for further management of the injury."
Markram admitted he has let his team down and said, "It's sad to be going home on this note and I completely understand what I've done wrong and take full accountability for it. It's unacceptable in a Proteas environment and to let the team down is what hurts me the most. I've learned a lot from this and the other players I'm sure, have learned from it as well. We understand in sport that emotions run high and sometimes the frustration gets the better of you as it did for me, but like I said, it's no excuse. I've taken full responsibility for it, I have apologised to the team and hopefully I can make it up to them and the people of South Africa soon."
Mitchell Marsh injured his bowling arm in bizarre circumstances during the Sheffield Shield encounter between Western Australia and Tasmania at the WACA ground in Perth on Monday. The all-rounder has been diagnosed with a fracture on his middle finger bone and has ruled him out of competitive action for six weeks. Marsh was batting well on 53 but he was caught and bowled by Jackson Bird. As he entered the dressing room, he punched the wall in anger and injured his bowling arm.
