Australia completed a 4-0 rout over traditional rivals England after beating them comprehensively in the fifth and final Test at Sydney on Monday.

The visitors were bowled out for a paltry 180 to lose the match by an innings and 123 runs on the fifth day of the final Test.

England captain Joe Root spent the morning in hospital with severe dehydration from a bout of gastroenteritis and, although he resumed his innings an hour into the day, could not carry on after lunch and retired on 58.

Australian seamer Pat Cummins produced a stellar spell of fast bowling accounting for three English batsman in quick time. England lost three wickets for 12 runs to Australia pace bowler , who ended with 4-39 and 8-119.

At the end of it all, there was an anti-climax when tailender Jimmy Anderson's wicket was a point of contention, whether he had edged Josh Hazlewood to Paine.

There was no bitterness to conclude the match as England opted against a review and shook hands with the victorius Australian side.
