Coronavirus In Cricket, Football And Other Sporting Nations - Numbers Show Dire Situation

The coronavirus pandemic has decimated sporting calendars all over the globe, with cricket, football and all sporting events getting postponed, stalled and cancelled in what promises to be the worst crisis for sports in peace-time.

When the year 2020 arrived, there was immense fun in store for sports fans. The year 2020 was supposed to be the year of Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Football's Euro 2020, IPL 2020, ICC World T20 2020. In short, it was a period of non-stop sporting action which would keep fans occupied throughout the year. However, the coronavirus pandemic, that has killed over 21,000 people and infected close to five lakh people worldwide has completely stalled sporting activity in the world. Bilateral series between India vs South Africa, Australia vs New Zealand, Sri Lanka vs England and Pakistan vs Bangladesh have all been curtailed due to the coronavirus.

England have suspended professional cricket until May 28 while India's domestic season has been postponed due to coronavirus. Australia and New Zealand's regional cricket has been cancelled while there is a major cloud over IPL 2020, which has been postponed to April 15. Apart from cricket, other sports have taken a major hit. Football's Euro 2020 has been postponed to next year while the marquee sporting event of the year, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has been postponed to the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus.

Football's big five football leagues, which is the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 have all been suspended. Apart from China, the coronavirus has wrecked havoc in Europe, Australia and is threatening to create problems in Asia as well. With sport being played all over the globe, it is worth noting the impact of the coronavirus in terms of number of fatalities and the situation there of the sporting activity. We are dividing this into cricket and the criteria will be the 12 Test playing nations. In Europe, we will look at the top five leagues and the impact there while we will also look at the status of American Sports as well as the Olympics.

Coronavirus In Football

The coronavirus pandemic has decimated football and there is a fear that the uncertainty over the resumption of the major leagues could result in a massive economic collapse of the clubs. There is a fear that if the major leagues in Europe are cancelled, then the loss will be close to 4 billion euros.
