England’s star cricketer Joe Root’s magnificent 184 runs from 227 balls helped the hosts to cross 350-run mark on the first day of the first test match against South Africa.
Batting first, England lost two early wickets as Cook and Jennings made mere 3 and 8 runs, respectively. Ballance and Bairstow also couldn’t do much and got out for 20 and 10 runs, respectively.
But the 167-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Root and Ali helped England get into comfortable position.
As far as South Africa’s bowling attack is concerned, Philander impressed everyone by taking 3 crucial wickets for 46 runs in 16 overs. Morkel and Rabada also took 1-1 wicket each. This is the first match of the four-match test series.
