Hardik Pandya's back surgery could put him out of action for close to five months.

New Delhi:

Hardik Pandya, who played the Twenty20 International series against South Africa recently, has undergone a successful back surgery in London. Hardik first sustained the injury during the Asia Cup in UAE last September. He recovered in time to play in the IPL and the World Cup before the injury resurfaced. However, the surgery is expected to keep him on the sidelines for close to five months.

"Surgery done successfully. Extremely grateful to everyone for your wishes. Will be back in no time! Till then miss me," Hardik posted a message with a picture on his Instagram account. Pandya's surgery comes at a time when India pacer Jasprit Bumrah suffered a stress fracture on his lower back and that is expected to keep him out of action at least for the next couple of months.

The injury to Pandya and Bumrah is a big blow to the Indian cricket team, who will be aiming to build a good team for the World T20 which will take place in Australia. The timeline given to Pandya suggests that he could directly play the IPL for Mumbai Indians while Bumrah's availability for the upcoming series against Bangladesh and West Indies will depend on how he recovers from the surgery.

Bumrah and Pandya both had decent outings in the World Cup. Bumrah is currently the best bowler in the world and he occupies the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings for bowlers. In the series against West Indies, Bumrah picked up his fourth five-wicket haul but also took a hat-trick in the Test match in Sabina Park, Jamaica as India won the series 2-0.
