England upstage Sri Lanka to set a new world record of highest total in a One-Day International match, as the hosts put a mighty total of 444 against Pakistan in the third ODI match at Nottingham. This is the second time England has notched up 400 plus total in limited overs cricket.
After all, there have only been 18 occasions in the history of ODI cricket when teams have crossed the special landmark. South Africa top the list, having scored 400 or more seven times whereas India follows second having scored 400 plus five times. Following them are England, Australia and Sri Lanka, who have scored 400+ on two occasions each; New Zealand has done so once each.
South Africa and Sri Lanka, in particular, deserve special mention as they are the only teams to have crossed a total of 400 while batting second. While the Proteas were successful in their attempt as their total of 438 for 9 against Australia was enough to give them victory, Sri Lanka fell short by a slender margin as they managed 411 for 8 in reply to India’s total of 414 for 7 at Rajkot in 2009.
Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe haven’t yet made 400+ in ODI cricket
