India beat South Africa by 8 wickets in a crucial match in the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday.

Batting first, South Africa were bowled out by the Men in Blue at 191 in 44.3 overs. In reply, the defending champions chased down the target with 12 overs to spare, reaching 193 for two in 38 overs.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli in a post-match press conference praised the bowling department saying the pressure was built by the bowlers that resulted in those breakthroughs that the team got in the field.

The Proteas lived up to their ‘Perennial Chokers’ tag in a virtual quarter-final clash that turned out to be a thoroughly one-sided encounter.

Shikhar Dhawan (78 off 83 balls) and skipper Virat Kohli (76 off 101 balls) made it look like a walk in the park as India chased down a target of 192 in only 38 overs.

It would take a dramatic swing in net run-rate for India to be toppled as Group B leaders, so they are likely to play Bangladesh at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Brief scores:

South Africa: 191 all out in 44.3 overs (Quinton de Kock 53; Jasprit Bumrah 2/28, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/23)

India: 193/2 in 38 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 78, Virat Kohli 76 not out)

The India and South Africa clash in the Champions Trophy was being billed as a virtual quarterfinal as it was a must win encounter for both teams. Both the heavyweights were clashing for a place in the semifinal and the match was scheduled to be played on Sunday afternoon at the Kennington Oval, London.
