Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the first ODI in Sydney. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up his 100th wicket by removing Aaron Finch while Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Alex Carey. Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh slammed fifties but both could not carry on. Peter Handscomb played some attacking cricket and notched up his second fify and a late burst from Marcus Stoinis helped Australai reach a good score. The hosts blasted 93 runs in the last 10 overs to help them reach a great score. In response, Virat Kohli's side got off to a disastrous start as they lost three wickets for four runs but a partnership of 138 runs between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma kept India in the hunt. Dhoni's 68th fifty and Rohit's record 22nd century was the key as India stayed in the contest but once Rohit fell cheaply, India lost the initiaitve and lost the game by 34 runs as Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
