New Zealand put up a clinical performance in the first Test at the Basin Reserve to win by 10 wickets against Virat Kohli's Indian cricket team. Using the local conditions and the wind to perfection, Tim Southee picked up nine wickets in the match and was well supported by Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson. Kane Williamson starred with the bat and 123 runs from the lower order proved to be key in New Zealand joining the elite list of nations who have won 100 Test matches. The action now shifts to the Hagley Oval in Christchurch and this will be the first time India wil be playing at the venue, which started hosting Tests in 2014.
New Zealand have won four and lost just once which was to Australia while the previous Test in 2018 was drawn against England. The Bangladesh Test was cancelled due to the terror attacks in Christchurch and for Virat Kohli, this Test is their last chance to end what has been a mixed tour on a high. After the 5-0 whitewash, India were whitewashed 3-0 in the ODIs for the first time in 31 years and at the Basin Reserve, they were undone by swing and bounce. Jasprit Bumrah has looked rusty while Virat Kohli has not been in good form. Ishant Sharma was the only standout bowler in Wellington and he will be the key again in Christchurch. Neil Wagner is expected to be back and New Zealand could go for a four-pronged pace attack while India might be tempted to give a go to Umesh Yadav.
