Rising Pune Supergiant’s skipper Steve Smith on Thursday guided his team to a seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in their opening IPL match at Pune.
It was an extremely good knock under pressure as Pune was chasing the mighty target 185. Smith held his nerve in the last over and finished off the match with two consecutive sixes.
Pune needed 13 runs from the final over and Smith hit a six off the fourth ball, picking a Kieron Pollard slow ball needing another four for a win from two balls. He did not wait for the final delivery and hit the fifth ball into the stands to the huge roar of the home crowd.
Ajinkya Rahane also made a significant contribution as he hit a brilliant 60 from 34 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes.
Smith and Rahane stitched 58 runs for the second wicket from seven overs to lay the foundation for the run chase.
