Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday officially appointed senior Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir as their captain for the 2018 season. Gautam who led Kolkata Knight Riders for seven years in Indian Premier League reunited with the Delhi franchise after he was bought for 2.8 crore at the IPL 2018 auctions.
Ever since Gambhir was bought by Daredevils, the left-hander was seen as the front-runner for donning the captaincy's hat in the upcoming edition. Hemant Dua, Delhi Daredevils CEO, made the news official at an event on Wednesday.
"I am more excited than I have ever been," Gambhir said on his return to Daredevils.
The south paw left Delhi Daredevils in 2010 after having them led that season. After spending three years with Delhi, Gambhir was named Kolkata Knight Riders captain and led them to two IPL titles in seven years.
Ricky Ponting, who is the head coach of the Daredevils had given a strong indication that Gambhir leading Delhi for IPL 2018. Ponting praised Gambhir's captaincy skills and was keen on him working with the youngsters and helping Delhi achieve their maiden IPL title.
"If you look at his leadership, we did not find any fault when captaining KKR. His last season of IPL also has also been very good. So we thought it would be good to have him as captain working with some of the young Indian players. So, we have gone for an experienced captain and I am sure he will do the job for us," Ponting had said after the auction.
