The coronavirus pandemic has decimated sporting calendars with plenty of events being suspended, cancelled or postponed. Cricket is in a virtual lockdown with no events scheduled or resuming in the near future to the coronavirus pandemic. In this period, many sporting personalities have done their bit to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Sachin Tendulkar donated Rs 50 lakh to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, which has so far claimed 17 Indian lives and wreaked havoc globally.

Tendulkar's donation is so far the biggest contribution among India's leading sportspersons, some of whom have pledged their salaries while a few others have donated medical equipment to fight the dreaded coronavirus, which has caused more than 24,000 deaths globally. the Pathan brothers -- Irfan and Yusuf -- donated 4000 face masks to Baroda police and health department. Among athletes from other disciplines, wrestler Bajrang Punia and sprinter Hima Das are some of the prominent names to have donated their salaries in the battle against the dreaded virus which has led to a 21-day national lockdown. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, through a Pune based NGO, made a contribution of Rs 1 lakh but this has resulted in massive trolling for the former India captain.

Many fans were not pleased with the amount given away by MS Dhoni as they took to social media to vent out their anger on Dhoni. Social media claimed that despite Dhoni being one of the richest cricketers in the world with a net worth of rupees 800 Crores, his contribution to fighting coronavirus pandemic is too small. Sakshi Dhoni took to Twitter and lashed out at the false reportage and at the trolls. "I request all media houses to stop carrying out false news at sensitive times like these ! Shame on You ! I wonder where responsible journalism has disappeared!", Sakshi vented out on her Twitter anger.

What Is The 'Real' Story?

According to reports, Dhoni had donated a sum of Rs 1 lakh via a crowdfunding website Ketto to a public charitable trust in Pune, Mukul Madhav Foundation, in order to battle coronavirus pandemic. However, Dhoni has NOT yet made his own individual contribution either to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and Chief Minister's Relief Fund. There is a feeling that he might make the contribution soon.

Perhaps, the trolls took offence from a report that Pakistan's centrally contracted players will contribute 5 million to fight the coronavirus cause This point was probably lost on the trolls as they went after Dhoni vehemently. With the coronavirus pandemic worsening, it might be only a matter of time before sportspersons, business personalities and other prominent celebrities in Bollywood announce funding initiatives in India to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Sakshi Dhoni might have a point as she called out the media for misreporting the facts.
