New Delhi:

West Indies cricket legend Garfield Sobers or popularly known as Garry Sobers, on August 31, 1968, became the first cricketer to tonk six sixes in an over. Gary Sobers, who is regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders to have graced the cricket field, made left-arm pacer Malcolm Nash his victim as the Windies legend decided to switch to all-out-attack mode.

Nottinghamshire in the 1968 season were enjoying a comfortable position of 308/5 in their first innings against Glamorgan, when Sobers decided to go berserk and put quick runs on the board. Nash, however, decided to bowl slowly, a decision he would have regretted for a long time.

The first two balls were smashed at the cow corner with ease with the next ball vanishing over the long on boundary. The fourth delivery was elegantly pulled over the square leg fielder while the fifth delivery was all dramatic. Sobers smashed the ball at long-off only for Roger Davis to take the catch. But Davis didn’t anticipate the fact that his momentum was taking him to the boundary rope. The Windies legend was walking away when he realised that Davis had crossed the rope. The final delivery was tonked for the sixth biggie of the over.

Gary Sobers declared the innings immediately after achieving the feat as Nottinghamshire won the match comfortably by 166 runs. Sobers scored 72 off 139 deliveries in the second innings as well.

Later, Ravi Shastri achieved the same feat off Tilak Raj in a Mumbai-Baroda Ranji Trophy game. Herschelle Gibbs later became the first player to hit 6 sixes in International cricket against the Netherlands in the 50-over World Cup and then Yuvraj Singh achieved the same against England in the T20 World Cup.
