Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat in the first Test against Australia in the Adelaide Test. Everybody was keeping a keen eye on what the playing XI would be. The Indian cricket team skipper informed that Rohit Sharma was in the side and Hanuma Vihari was rested. On explaining the rationale in picking Rohit, Kohli said, “Rohit can bat well with tail, has the shots on these kind of wickets, he's good with the short ball and can attack the bowlers" India were left reeling at 41/4 and it was left to Rohit, in the company of Cheteshwar Pujara to steady the Indian innings and put pressure back on Australia.

In the beginning of the innings, Rohit looked steady and displayed solid technique. The right-hander got going with a nicely timed four off Nathan Lyon through extra cover. Rohit showed no fear against the pacers even as he took on Pat Cummins by pulling a short ball flat over deep square leg. The Mumbai batsman continued to target Cummins by lashing a boundary through cover.

However, Rohit hit the shot of the day after the end of the first session. In the third ball of the 34th over bowled by Cummins, the bowler pitched the ball full outside off stump, Rohit stood on the crease and effortlessly lofted the ball over wide long off for a glorious six. Buoyed by that shot, Rohit whacked off-spinner Nathan Lyon to the deep backward square leg fence. The shot was not timed well and Marcus Harris ran to his left to take the catch but the momentum took him over the ropes.

On the next ball, Rohit suffered a brain-fade moment. He danced down the track and looked to hoick a flighted ball over deep midwicket but he did not get to the pitch of the ball and ended up miscuing it to backward square leg where Harris ran and took the catch. The poor shot played by Rohit resulted in Twitteratis losing their mind as they bashed Rohit for wasting a golden chance to shine in Tests overseas. This was the fourth time that Lyon had dismissed Rohit in Tests, the most the batsman has fallen to any bowler in the longest format of the game.

The 45-run stand had almost revived India but Pujara held firm, scoring his 20th fifty and nearing 5000 Test runs as India looked to reach a good score against Australia on a flat deck in Adelaide.
