New Delhi:

When it comes to notching milestones and smashing records on a consistent basis, Virat Kohli is a colossus in the modern day. The Indian cricket skipper has notched up so many records that the ordinary cricket fan has lost count of how many records and milestones the cricketer has achieved in his period. In Adelaide, Kohli became the fourth Indian player after VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid to hit 1000 Test runs in Australia. In the Adelaide Test, Kohli has fallen for 3 and 34 but on day 3, he achieved yet another record, this time as captain.

The right-hander became the first Indian captain to score 2000 runs in overseas conditions. The previous highest tally of runs by an Indian captain in overseas conditions belonged to Sourav Ganguly, who hit 1693 runs at an average of 43.41. Kohli achieved the feat when he flicked Pat Cummins to the deep midwicket fence for three runs to go past the landmark.

Kohli is the ninth international skipper to go past 2000 runs in overseas Tests. South Africa’s Graeme Smith leads the tally with 4853 runs at an average of 53 with 15 centuries. Apart from Smith, West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd, New Zealand’s Steven Fleming, Australia’s Allan Border, Ricky Ponting and Bob Simpson, England’s Alastair Cook and Pakistan’s Misbah ul Haq are the others to have reached this milestone.

Smith has captained in the most games and has also the highest tally of centuries and fifties among all captains in the world. Kohli, along with Steve Waugh and Michael Clarke, are the only players to have more centuries than fifties as skipper. Kohli, who has scored nine centuries, is tied second for the most number of overseas ton with Lloyd.

In the current Indian team, Kohli is the only batsman to have hit centuries in England, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. The right-hander has hit centuries in six out of the seven countries he has played a Test against, with Bangladesh being the only exception. With age still on Kohli’s side, he has the capability to smash plenty of records in the coming years.
