Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket team skipper, has always had a fiery persona on the field. This would come to the fore in his contests against Australia in Down Under. In 2011/12, Kohli showed the middle finger to a section of the crowd in Sydney after he was subject to plenty of abuse. On the previous tour in 2014/15, he was involved in an intense confrontation with Mitchell Johnson which led to him to say that he does not respect people who do not respect him. However, in an interaction with former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist on Fox Sports, Kohli has admitted he realised his mistakes.
“I didn’t have a good understanding of where to draw the line and stuff like that. Those are things that I, I wouldn’t say I regret, but those definitely I look at them as mistakes. But mistakes that were important for me to commit so I can learn from them,” Kohli said.

“The one thing is that I’ve always been myself, I’ve never tried to be someone else because of the opinion. I was never a perfect mould of typical, old school cricketer, I always just wanted to find my own way and I guess those things were a part of that journey,” Kohli said.

Even before departing for the tour of Australia, the Indian cricket team skipper said that he would not get into a confrontational mode with the opposition. “I think from last time round, I've become more assured of myself, I don't really find the need to prove anything to anyone. In the early stage of my career I used to think of these things as important milestones which are really important in one's career, but now the focus is purely and solely on making the team win at any cost.I don't find the need to get involved in anything with the opposition and I think those are changes that keep happening gradually as you go forward,” Kohli had said at that time.
Kohli indirectly admitted that the mistakes that he committed have only made him a better individual today. “I learn from my own mistakes, I realise my own mistakes myself and just kept correcting them through the journey,” Kohli said.
