Welcome to News Nation live coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Uruguay lock horns with the hosts Russia at the Cosmos Arena, Samara in the top of the group clash of Group A on Monday.
Even though both teams are already through, this match still has meaning as it will decide who will finish top of the group. Russia’s vastly superior goal difference puts them in the box seat and this is a chance for them to make history.
No Russian (or Soviet) team has ever managed to win every group game at a World Cup (WC), but with Uruguay winning by mere single-goal margins, this is an opportunity for Russia that will likely never come around again.
The two sides have met only once before, in a 1-1 friendly drawback in May 2012. If H2H results against the Soviet Union are also used here, Uruguay’s record reads: W1, D1, L7, including two historical WC meetings (W1, L1).

Luis Suárez (Uruguay) has had a difficult time so far, but got off the mark against Saudi Arabia and will be as much of a threat as ever.
